WHAT we know:
BWXT (Babcock & Wilcox) built the nuclear reactor involved in the Three Mile Island accident.
Now they want to bring high purity depleted uranium manufacturing into the heart of the Tri-Cities — starting in Jonesborough.
BWXT wants to do 300 metric tons of high purity depleted uranium production in Jonesborough — directly inside our communities.
Approving this rezoning would violate Washington County’s Comprehensive Plan, which expressly calls for compatibility between adjacent land uses, the protection of agricultural and residential areas from industrial encroachment, and the preservation of environmentally sensitive lands and flood plains.
WHY all of tri-cities should care:
A 50-mile air shed centered on Jonesborough covers Bristol, Johnson City, Greeneville, and Kingsport.
Uranium processing can release radioactive dust and radon gas; radon exposure is a leading cause of lung cancer.
Depleted uranium is a toxic heavy metal and internal radiation hazard.
Rail lines and Highway 11E would carry radioactive material through populated areas.
BWXT wants to build industrial uranium facilities inside a 40-acre mapped floodplain connected to the Nolichucky River watershed.
A flood event could carry radioactive contaminants into regional waterways, posing a severe public health risk.
WHERE it’s happening
DOE/NNSA awarded BWXT a contract for High Purity Depleted Uranium (HPDU) production in Jonesborough.
The site is close to Crockett High, Grandview Elementary, family farms, wells, and more than 650 homes.
Little Limestone Creek flows toward the Nolichucky River, a regional drinking-water watershed.
What can you do right now?
Tell Washington County Commissioners:
“Vote NO on BWXT’s M-2 rezoning. Protect our air, water, farms, schools, and families.”
by calling, emailing, signing the petition and showing up to the public meeting.
